<image:caption>Switzerland is very protective of the landscape. There are many environmental regulations for the operation of a quarry and the extraction zone is clearly defined. Within the currently defined boundary of the extraction zone, there is stone to last twenty-five years. Beyond this, it will be important to expand the extraction zone in collaboration with the local and state authorities. The machine above drills into the rock. <image:caption>In the late 1700's, a group of school kids built a stone tower or cairn at the top of the hill where Hallgrimskirkja now stands. The hill was named for this tower, literally 'school cairn hill'. In the early 1800's, the cairn was rebuilt as a tower so that people could catch views of the area. The city maintained access to the tower, building a road called Skólavörðustígur. A ban on horse traffic was needed because the hill was also home to a quarry and traffic created problems. The first buildings on the street went up in the mid 19th century, some still stand today. In the early 20th century, Guðjón Samúelsson created plans to make this area a center of culture, education and religion. While Hallgrimskirkja was built, the war thwarted his plans for the most part. Today, the street is a commercial area with galleries, restaurants and design shops.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The statue of Leif Eiriksson on Skólavörðuholt was a gift from the United States for Iceland’s millennium celebration of the Alþingi's founding in 1930, but to make room for the generous gift, the tower on Skólavörðuholt was demolished, leaving people without a view over the city. Hallgrímskirkja, named for Iceland’s primary psalm composer, Hallgrímur Pétursson, was designed in 1937 to help create views. Construction started in 1945, though the church wasn’t completed until 1986, thirty-six years after Samúelsson’s death. The plaza around the church remains a rather hard space without a sense of pedestrian scale.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As of 2015, one million foreigners visited Iceland. This is about three times the resident population and about thirty-two percent of the tourists visited the Blue Lagoon, about the same as the population of Iceland. During the summer, about twenty-five hundred people visited the Blue Lagoon per day. The basic entry fee is approximately forty USD. There are several food and beverage outlets, a gift shop and spa services on offer, as well. Daily gross receipts in summer must be extraordinary, when daylight extends well into the night and there is a captive audience for food and beverage.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Stories Here - The Core - Blue Lagoon</image:title>
<image:caption>While the place must always be under some level of construction, due to the need to create new channels and pools because of the silica/permeability dilemma, there is currently a great amount of construction occurring. The lagoon is being enlarged to create more outdoor massage areas with floating mattresses, adjacent to a new, sixty-room, Basalt-designed hotel, conference center, skin-care bar, spa area and restaurant. The design promises to focus on the stark environmental elements, to emphasize the relationship between people and nature and to enhance the perception of man-made elements within the landscape.   The lagoon holds six million liters of approximately one hundred degree Fahrenheit water, all of which is renewed in forty hours, thanks to Svartsengi. Like elsewhere in the country, cleanliness is important, every person is asked to take a hot shower and to use cleanser prior to entering the lagoon. As silica damages hair, people do not dunk their heads in the lagoon. The Blue Lagoon water is monitored at least every two weeks and tested for three kinds of coliform by an agency, called Blue Flag. The lagoon water is certified by this outside agency, and its percentages of these coliform are always well below the amounts that would trigger alarms.</image:caption>

The silica rises from the mantle layer to the surface of the earth and people take that silica mud and slather it all over their faces. The algae and minerals in the Blue Lagoon have been tested to reveal the stimulation of collagen growth. Essentially, it rejuvenates the skin as people soak in geothermal water.</image:caption>

The ground plane is paved with mud, ash, moisture, and basalt gravel. In the background, a moss covered lava field, and a monolithic landform stop the eye. From the not-distant shore, winds whip across the plain. The ground crunches under foot; and where water accumulates, the sky reflects, creating a vastly monochromatic landscape on an over-cast day.</image:caption>
